Bronx ex-con

The Bronx ex-con who disemboweled his wife, then called his parole officer and the father of his victim’s daughter to tell them, was able to avoid capture for several hours because he dismantled his court-ordered GPS ankle bracelet before fleeing, sources said Tuesday. The state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision’s Division of Parole had given Virgil Solis, 58, the bracelet upon his release from state custody in 2016 for a vicious assault conviction. “We gave him [the GPS unit] because of his violent crime and because the court ordered him to be under supervision,” a government source explained. “You look at the nature of the crime and crimes he has done in the past. The fact that the court ordered him under supervision was enough for us.” It’s unclear if Solis dismantled the bracelet before or after he allegedly killed his wife. Solis also was deemed a Level 3 sex offender, which means he was at the highest risk of repeating such crimes. Sex offenders and other “high-risk cases” are usually given the ankle bracelets so authorities can keep tabs on them. Solis, who served at least 18 years behind bars for assault, is accused of murdering his wife, Valerie, inside her Tremont apartment. “I killed my wife,” he told his parole officer, according to police sources. “Come get her.”
